Actias luna
is one of North America's most iconic Saturniid moths, commonly known as the Luna Moth. With its pale green wings, long tails, and eye-like markings, it is both elegant and easy to raise, making it a favorite among beginners and experienced Lepidoptera keepers alike.
These moths are large, calm, and beginner-friendly, ideal for educational displays or first-time Saturniid breeders.
Environment: Mesh cage or ventilated enclosure for adults; containers or fresh-cut host plant branches for larvae
Humidity: Moderate; maintain light humidity and avoid excess moisture during pupation
Diet (larvae): Accepts a wide range of host plants including Betula (birch), Juglans (walnut), Liquidambar (sweetgum), Carya (hickory), and Persimmon
Behavior: Larvae are solitary feeders; pupation occurs in loose silk cocoons between leaves or in debris
Temperature: 21–26 °C; cooler temperatures may slow development but are tolerated well
