Actias maenas

commonly known as the Malaysian Moon Moth, is a large Saturniid native to Southeast Asia and the broader Indomalayan region. This species is hardy and suitable for both display and breeding projects.

These moths are relatively easy to rear in captivity, making them accessible to beginners. However, achieving successful pairings can be the true challenge when completing the breeding cycle.

Environment: Mesh cage or other well ventilated enclosure for adults. Provide ample flight space,  tail streamers are fragile and tatter quickly against enclosure walls. Provide fresh cut host plant branches in water for larvae.

Humidity: Moderate to high. Never allow condensation or wet leaves inside the rearing container, as moisture on foliage or walls significantly increases the risk of bacterial infection and diarrhea in larvae.

Diet (larvae): Accepts a range of host plants including Liquidambar (sweetgum, highly recommended), Rhus (sumac), Prunus (cherry), Malus (apple),  Larvae grow more slowly than other Actias species. Rear early instars (L1–L2) in closed containers: increase ventilation from L3 onward.

Behavior: Larvae are solitary. First instar is orange with a black head; mature larvae are dark yellow-green. Pupation occurs in a cocoon spun from leaves gathered together. Adults are strong fliers and pair 1–2 hours before sunrise. A tropical species with no pupal diapause, continuously brooded.

Temperature: 22–28 °C is ideal.
