Gonimbrasia dione
is a large and colorful Saturniid moth native to Southern Africa. Its vibrant eye spots and patterned wings make it a popular species for display and education, as well as for breeding projects.

This species is hardy and fast growing, making it suitable for both beginner and experienced Lepidoptera keepers.

Environment: Mesh cage or well-ventilated enclosure for adults. Provide fresh cut host plant branches in water or potted plants for larvae.

Humidity: Moderate. Mist lightly and maintain good airflow to prevent mold during the larval and pupal stages.

Diet (larvae): Larvae feed on a variety of host plants including Acacia, Liquidambar (sweetgum), Eucalyptus, Prunus (cherry), and other broadleaf trees and shrubs.

Behavior: Larvae are solitary feeders and change color as they progress through their instars. Pupation occurs in thick brown silk cocoons, usually attached to twigs or hidden among leaves. Adults are strong fliers and need enough space to avoid wing damage.

Temperature: 20–28 °C is ideal. They tolerate cooler temperatures but will develop more slowly.
