Note: This species is currently undergoing active breeding in our facility. It will be made available once we have a healthy and sustainable number of offspring.
Ommatoiulus moreleti
is a robust and fast-moving millipede native to the Iberian Peninsula and Madeira. It has a smooth, dark brown to black cylindrical body with reddish legs and can reach lengths of 4 to 6 cm. It is well adapted to Mediterranean and Atlantic forest conditions and is known for its activity and ability to tolerate a range of conditions.
These millipedes are hardy, easy to care for, and ideal for naturalistic terrariums. While commonly found in the wild, they are rarely bred in captivity and can form stable colonies when given sufficient space and depth.
Environment:
Use a terrarium or ventilated container with at least 10 cm of substrate. Recommended substrate mix includes organic topsoil, decomposed leaf litter, rotting wood, sphagnum moss, and added calcium such as crushed oyster shell or cuttlebone. Provide bark, moss clumps, and hiding spaces to mimic forest floor conditions.
Humidity:
Maintain 60 to 80 percent humidity. Keep the lower layers of the substrate consistently moist while allowing the top layer to dry slightly to prevent mold.
Diet:
Feeds mainly on decaying organic matter in the substrate. Supplement twice weekly with vegetables such as carrot, zucchini, sweet potato, and occasional soft fruits. A calcium source should be present at all times.
Behavior:
Active and moderately fast. This species does not climb much and prefers to stay on or just beneath the substrate. Mostly nocturnal but can be visible in dim light. Peaceful and compatible in small groups.
Temperature:
Keep between 18 and 24 °C. Short-term exposure to slightly lower or higher temperatures is tolerated, but prolonged conditions above 26 °C should be avoided.
