Opisthoplatia orientalis

is a glossy, deep black cockroach species with a subtle red fringe and characteristic white rim around the pronotum. It is a tropical, burrow-associated species known for its strong appearance and impressive contrast.

These roaches are robust, moderately active, and do well in tropical setups. Though not commonly kept, they adapt well in captivity when humidity is maintained and hiding options are abundant.

Environment:
Terrarium or plastic bin with a deep substrate mix of coconut fiber, decaying wood, and leaf litter. Add bark pieces and cork slabs as shelter

Humidity:
High humidity between 70 and 90 percent. Ensure part of the substrate stays moist at all times while allowing enough ventilation to prevent mold

Diet:
Decaying leaves and wood are their staple diet. Supplement with fruits, vegetables, and protein such as fish flakes or dried insects. Provide calcium in the form of cuttlebone or eggshell powder

Behavior:
Opisthoplatia orientalis is mainly nocturnal and prefers to hide during the day. While it may occasionally burrow, it typically shelters beneath bark or surface debris. It does not climb smooth surfaces

Temperature:
Keep between 24 and 28 degrees Celsius. Avoid prolonged exposure below 20 degrees or above 30 degrees
