Porcellio flavomarginatus
commonly known as the Yellow‑bordered Woodlouse, is a striking Porcellio species native to Greece and nearby regions. Known for its bold black-and-white pattern and yellow (or white) edged “skirt,” this isopod is active, diurnal, and highly sought after by intermediate keepers for display colony setups.
These isopods are medium-to-large, fast-growing, and social—but they require carefully balanced moisture and ventilation, making them best suited for dedicated and experienced enthusiasts.
Environment: Use a ventilated plastic bin or small aquarium (10–15 L); include a substrate mix of rich compost/topsoil, leaf litter, and rotting wood. Provide cork bark, rocks, or bark pieces to create vertical space and hides.
Humidity: Low–moderate; maintain a moisture gradient—only 10–25% of the enclosure should be damp moss/leaf litter, the rest kept dry to prevent mold
Diet: Always supply leaf litter and soft rotting wood as staple food. Supplement 2–3× weekly with vegetables (cucumber, carrot, squash), and 1–2× weekly with protein sources such as fish flakes or freeze-dried shrimp/minnows. Provide calcium via crushed oyster shell, cuttlebone, or eggshell .
Behavior: Diurnal, active, and curious; thrives in social colonies. Good ventilation promotes climbing and natural behavior patterns .
Temperature: 18–26 °C (64–79 °F); a slight night drop to around 17 °C is acceptable. Seasonal warmth (up to mid‑20s °C) may boost breeding .
