Porcellio magnificus
is a large, orange-colored isopod native to the cliffs of southern Spain. It is known for its impressive size (up to 40 mm) and striking appearance. This species prefers dryer conditions and is ideal for keepers experienced with giant Porcellio species.
These isopods are medium‑large, moderately active, and may be territorial among adults. They breed seasonally, particularly in spring and fall, and are best suited to keepers who can manage specific humidity and ventilation needs.
Environment: Provide a spacious enclosure (minimum 15 L, ideally 25 L) with shallow substrate (~2.5 cm) of mixed leaf litter and hardwood pieces. Include hides and airflow vents on sides.
Humidity: Keep conditions mostly dry. Mist only a moist moss corner weekly to provide a moist retreat while avoiding excessive moisture that impedes molting.
Diet: Offer hardwood leaf litter and soft rotting wood as staples (e.g., oak, elm, maple). Supplement lightly with vegetables and occasional fruits. Include calcium sources like cuttlebone or oyster shell.
Behavior: Surface-active and nocturnal. Females aggressively guard their young in burrows shortly after brooding. Males and females may defend territory. Clean ventilation is essential to prevent stress.
Temperature: 18–26 °C, with optimal reproduction around 22–26 °C. Avoid high heat and rapid moisture increases during molting periods.
