Rhyparobia maderae
commonly known as the Madeira Cockroach, is a medium to large roach species native to Madeira but introduced in several tropical and subtropical regions. It is a hardy and active species that makes a good display insect or feeder roach.
This species is easy to care for, breeds quickly, and adapts well to a range of enclosure setups, making it suitable for both beginners and experienced keepers.
Environment: Provide a well-ventilated container or terrarium of at least 10 liters. Use 5–8 cm of substrate such as coconut fiber or soil with leaf litter. Add bark pieces or egg cartons for climbing and hiding.
Humidity: Moderate (60–70%). Mist lightly 2–3 times per week but avoid excess moisture. Ensure ventilation to prevent mold.
Diet: Omnivorous. Feed a mix of fresh fruits (banana, apple, orange) and vegetables (carrot, sweet potato) along with dry foods like fish flakes, dog kibble, or insect chow. Include a calcium source such as cuttlebone or eggshell.
Behavior: Mostly nocturnal but adults and nymphs are active and visible at night. They are non-climbing and non-flying, making them easy to contain. Colonies grow rapidly in warm, stable conditions.
Temperature: Ideal temperature is 24–28 °C. Cooler temperatures slow breeding and growth but are tolerated short term.
