Acromyrmex octospinosus
is a highly specialized species of leafcutter ant native to Central and South America. Known for their impressive fungus-growing behavior, they harvest fresh vegetation to cultivate a symbiotic fungus, which serves as their primary food source. This species is notable for its characteristic spines and polymorphic worker castes.
These ants are social, highly active, and require complex care, and are only recommended for experienced ant keepers with the proper infrastructure to support fungus-farming species.
Environment: Custom leafcutter setup with separate chambers for fungus, waste, and foraging
Humidity: High in fungus chamber (90–99%), moderate in foraging area; must be precisely controlled
Diet: Fresh leaves and flowers (e.g. bramble, rose, oak), organic vegetables — all pesticide-free
Behavior: Highly organized, caste-based activity, continuously active, requires large space
Temperature: 24–26 °C; fungus chamber must be kept stable and undisturbed
