Commonly known as the Elwes’ Pink-and-Green Hawk Moth, Anambulyx elwesi is a medium-sized sphingid admired for its soft green and pink hues and streamlined shape. It is sought after for its beauty and ease of rearing.
This species is hardy, grows quickly, and is well suited for both beginner and experienced Lepidoptera keepers.
Environment: Mesh cage or other well-ventilated enclosure for adults. Provide fresh cut host plant branches in water for larvae.
Humidity: Moderate. Mist lightly and ensure good airflow to prevent mold, particularly around pupation sites.
Diet (larvae): Larvae feed on Populus (poplar) and Salix (willow). Ensure a steady supply of fresh, untreated foliage.
Behavior: Larvae are solitary, robust, and undergo distinct color changes through their instars. Pupation occurs in the soil within a loose earthen cell. Adults do not feed and live only to reproduce. They are strong fliers and benefit from spacious enclosures.
Temperature: 20–28 °C is ideal. Cooler temperatures slow development but are tolerated.
