Argema mimosae
commonly known as the African Moon Moth, is a large Saturniid native to Southern Africa. It is instantly recognizable by its pale green wings, long tail streamers, and prominent eye spots. This species is hardy and ideal for both display and breeding projects.
These moths are robust, fast growing, and relatively easy to rear, making them suitable for both beginners and experienced Lepidoptera keepers.
Environment: Mesh cage or other well-ventilated enclosure for adults. Provide fresh cut host plant branches in water for larvae.
Humidity: Moderate. Mist lightly and ensure good ventilation to prevent mold, especially during pupation.
Diet (larvae): Accepts a wide range of host plants including Acacia, Liquidambar (sweetgum), Eucalyptus, Prunus (cherry), and Rhus (sumac).
Behavior: Larvae are solitary and change color across instars. Pupation takes place in strong brown cocoons attached to twigs or hidden in leaf litter. Adults are strong fliers and require ample space to avoid wing damage.
Temperature: 20–28 °C is ideal. Cooler temperatures slow development but are tolerated.
