Cubaris sp. “Crabby”

is a recently introduced and visually unique isopod species, named for its vivid reddish-orange coloration that sets it apart within the Cubaris genus. Originally discovered in Southeast Asia, it remains new in the hobby and is appreciated for its bold appearance and natural variation. Unlike selectively bred lines, Cubaris sp. “Crabby” is a naturally occurring locale or form, making it especially appealing to collectors seeking wild-type diversity.

These isopods are slow-reproducing, and sensitive to environmental changes, making them suitable only for experienced keepers with stable, high-humidity setups.

Environment: Tropical enclosure with deep substrate, moss, bark, and tightly sealed microclimate
Humidity: High (80–90%); maintain consistent moisture with minimal airflow loss
Diet: Decaying leaves and wood, soft vegetables, protein (e.g. shrimp pellets), and calcium
Behavior: Shy, reclusive, often burrowed or hidden in crevices
Temperature: 22–26 °C
