Hymenopus coronatus – Orchid Mantis
A striking mantis species native to Southeast Asia, well known for its flower-like appearance and bright pink-white coloration. Highly sought after in the hobby for both its beauty and fascinating predatory behavior.
Environment: A well ventilated enclosure with vertical twigs and artificial or live plants for perching. Space must allow safe molting.
Humidity: Moderate to high. Light misting is sufficient, but good airflow is essential to prevent mold and stuck molts.
Temperature: 24–30 °C is ideal. Cooler conditions slow growth.
Diet: Start nymphs on small flies (Drosophila melanogaster / hydei). Larger nymphs and adults take houseflies, bluebottles, and other flying insects of appropriate size. Small roaches are also possible. Avoid crickets as these can be bad to feed them.
Looks: Nymphs show a range of colors from white to pink. Cannibalistic if kept together, rear individually.
