Melanocera menippe – Speckled Emperor Moth
Commonly known as the Speckled Emperor Moth, Melanocera menippe is a striking Saturniid native to Sub-Saharan Africa. Its wings are decorated with a mix of earthy browns, creams, and contrasting eye spots, making it a distinctive and attractive species for display and breeding.
This species is robust, grows steadily, and is suitable for both beginner and advanced Lepidoptera enthusiasts.
Environment: Mesh cage or other well-ventilated enclosure for adults. Provide fresh cut host plant branches in water for larvae.
Humidity: Moderate. Mist occasionally and ensure good airflow to reduce risk of mold, especially near pupation sites.
Diet (larvae): Larvae accept a wide variety of host plants, including Acacia, Celtis, Eucalyptus, Prunus, and other broadleaf trees and shrubs.
Behavior: Larvae are solitary feeders, showing distinctive spiny appearance through instars. Pupation occurs in tough silk cocoons attached to branches or hidden among leaves. Adults are strong fliers, particularly active at dusk, and benefit from spacious flight enclosures.
Temperature: 20–28 °C is recommended. Development slows in cooler conditions but remains possible.
