Porcellio echinatus
is a naturally occurring isopod from Southern Europe and North Africa, recognized for its rough, spiky texture and medium size (around 12–20 mm). It is fast-breeding and regarded as one of the easier Porcellio species for hobbyists
These isopods are hardy, active, and able to tolerate a range of setups from semi-arid to moderately moist, making them suitable for both novice and experienced keepers
Environment: Tropical or woodland‐style setup with substrate of potting mix or coconut fiber, leaf litter, and rotting wood
Humidity: Medium; keep substrate lightly moist with some ventilation, no waterlogging
Diet: Decaying leaves and wood; supplement regularly with vegetables, fruit, fish flakes or dried shrimp, and provide calcium via cuttlebone or eggshell
Behavior: Surface‐active and social; visible most of the time, thrives in group colonies
Temperature: 18–26 °C
Shipped as a mix of healthy juveniles and subadults
Weather-appropriate packaging with insulation or cooling if needed
