Porcellio hoffmannseggii

is one of the largest and most iconic isopod species in the hobby, known for its armored appearance, prominent uropods, and bold behavior. Native to Southern Europe, this species thrives in dry, well-ventilated conditions and displays a wide range of natural coloration across localities.

These isopods are very large, active, and sensitive to excess humidity, best suited for keepers with experience in maintaining Mediterranean species.

Environment: Dry, spacious setup with bark, stones, and cork for hiding and climbing
Humidity: Low to moderate; keep most of the enclosure dry with a humid corner for hydration
Diet: Decaying leaves, wood, protein-rich food (e.g. fish flakes), and calcium (e.g. cuttlebone)
Behavior: Bold, often visible, fast-moving, requires good airflow and surface area
Temperature: 20–26 °C
