African Saturniidae Mix: Imbrasia obscura, Imbrasia epimethea & Gonimbrasia dione

Overview: This offering combines three tropical African Saturniidae species from the Bunaeini tribe. Imbrasia obscura and Imbrasia epimethea are native to Central Africa (Cameroon, DRC, Angola, Nigeria), while Gonimbrasia dione (a name historically used for Gonimbrasia petiveri) is found across West and Central Africa. All three are large, robust emperor moths whose caterpillars are traditionally valued as a food source in parts of their range, and they are increasingly popular in the exotic breeding hobby.

Environment: Mesh cage or other well ventilated enclosure for adults. Provide fresh cut host plant branches in water for larvae.

Humidity: Moderate to high, reflecting their tropical rainforest origin. Mist lightly and ensure good airflow to prevent mold, particularly around pupation sites.

Diet (larvae): Larvae are polyphagous. Recorded host plants include Canarium schweinfurthii, Acacia species, and other broadleaf trees and shrubs from families such as Burseraceae and Fabaceae. In captivity they generally also accept common substitute plants like Prunus, Liquidambar and Ligustrum.

Behavior: Larvae often feed gregariously in early instars before becoming more solitary as they mature. Pupation occurs in silk cocoons, typically spun among leaf litter or attached to branches.

Temperature: 24–28°C is ideal, reflecting their tropical origin. Cooler temperatures slow development but are tolerated.
