Armadillidium badium ‘High Yellow’
is a striking pill woodlouse originating from the Casteldaccia strain (Sicily), featuring an intense solid yellow coloration with minimal brown tones. Known for its eye catching appearance, it’s a hardy and prolific species suited for experienced keepers seeking a vibrant addition to display colonies.
These isopods are medium sized (up to ~18 mm), active both day and night, and reproduce readily but they require a balanced moisture gradient and proper ventilation, making them best for dedicated enthusiasts.
Environment:
Use a ventilated container or small terrarium; substrate should include leaf litter, rotting white wood, and moss. Provide cork bark or bark pieces to create hides and vertical space.
Humidity:
Maintain moderate humidity (~50–60%) with about ⅓ of the substrate kept damp, the rest dry to prevent mold. A moisture gradient allows them to move between damp and dry areas .
Diet:
Provide abundant decaying leaves, rotting wood, forest moss, and lichen. Supplement 2–3 times weekly with fruits, veggies (e.g., cucumber, carrot, squash), fish flakes or gammarus shrimp for protein, and include a calcium source such as cuttlebone, oyster shell, or limestone .
Behavior:
Active during day and night, both individually and in groups. Roll into a ball if disturbed, and appreciate climbing surfaces and hides.
Temperature:
Maintain between 17–26 °C (ideal ~21–26 °C). They tolerate mild fluctuations but avoid extremes .
