Gromphadorhina portentosa
is a large, wingless cockroach species native to Madagascar, known for its impressive size and the hissing sound it produces by forcing air through its spiracles. These roaches are dark brown to black with reddish segments and heavily armored bodies, especially in adult males with pronounced horns.
These cockroaches are long-lived, easy to handle, and suitable for education, display, and breeding projects. They are docile and adapt well to life in captivity.
Environment:
Plastic or glass terrarium with a secure lid; minimum 30 x 30 cm footprint. Use 5–10 cm of substrate such as coconut fiber or soil, and provide cork bark or egg crates as hides and climbing surfaces.
Humidity:
Maintain 60–70 percent humidity. Mist the enclosure lightly 2–3 times per week, keeping at least one corner dry to prevent mold.
Diet:
Feed a mix of vegetables, fruits, and dry food such as oats, fish flakes, or dog kibble. Avoid citrus. Provide a calcium source like crushed eggshell or cuttlebone to support exoskeleton development.
Behavior:
Nocturnal and slow-moving. Hisses when startled or handled. Males can be territorial. Generally peaceful in groups, but provide plenty of hiding spots to reduce stress.
Temperature:
Maintain temperatures between 24 and 28 °C. They tolerate room temperature but breed best with supplemental heat.
