Tetrodontophora bielanensis

is the largest springtail species in Europe, native to forest regions of Central and Eastern Europe. It is known for its dark, glossy body and its ability to release a strong, pungent defensive secretion when disturbed, giving it a notable presence among microfauna keepers. Despite its size for a springtail, it is completely harmless to handle indirectly.

These insects are non climbing, hardy, and detritivorous, making them suitable for keepers looking for a low maintenance bioactive cleanup crew or an interesting springtail culture on its own.

Environment: Humid enclosure with a deep substrate layer of leaf litter, moss, and decaying wood for burrowing and foraging

Humidity: High; substrate should stay consistently moist, never fully dry

Diet: Decaying plant matter, fungi, and detritus; occasional supplement of fish flakes or yeast

Behavior: Nocturnal and fossorial, but often visible on the substrate surface; releases a strong defensive odor when disturbed, not to be handled directly

Temperature: 15–20 °C
